I wake up the next morning still fully dressed. There’s a big ass woodpecker inside my head and my mouth feels like a furball ringed with glue. At least I learned one thing useful last night. Red wine and vodka don’t mix. I reach out and lift the pint glass of water that I filled when I went down for more booze. I can just about lift my head. I hit shuffle again on my phone and pray for some comforting words, musical chicken soup. But the messed-up universe that has become my world decides that’s not what I need. And before I can hit silent or fling my phone at the wall, Glen Hansard is roaring at me to redeem myself at the top of his godforsaken lungs.

‘I want to, Glen,’ I roar back. ‘But I’m still trying to figure out how.’

Everything feels wrong and I know most of it’s my own fault. I keep running away and holding everything inside and expecting my life to magically improve. None of which is working and I feel completely alone. Maybe it is time for me to trust the people who have earned it, ask for their help, and have the courage to go after my dreams. I’ll start by talking to Mam and Cathy again about Gran’s house.

As if on cue, Mam texts to say that Donal is cooking Sunday lunch later at his place and they’d love me to join them. It won’t be until about three o’clock and she’ll drive over to pick me up. That sounds good and I should surely be human again by that time, so I text back that I’d love to and add three kisses too. Hangovers always make me feel soppy and in need of a hug and my mam does the best hugs, so I’m all in.
